Never before in the history of the WWE have they being so determined to get a superstar over with the fans as they have been with John Cena. Almost three years after the push began the question still remains as to whether Cena is over or not with the fans.
Certain opponents have managed to get the fans to cheer for Cena but only Edge managed it out of his opponents with talent. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho all failed to get the fans on the side of John Cena. The opponents where Cena has been cheered for where hardly a sign of approval, a guy like The Great Khali is always going to be booed as he has no talent for the marks to respect and he's meant to be booed by every one else.
So why have WWE stuck by John Cena for so long? As already discussed he's not massively popular, he has his fans of course but no more than the likes of Christian had when he was with the WWE or than Chris Benoit. Sure he has great microphone skills but John Cenas in ring performance level is far below that of these two.
John Cena's character doesn't really stand out as amazing either his attitude seems forced and is nowhere near the level Steve Austin achieved but this seems to be where WWE want Cena to be as they have almost completely dropped his rapper gimmick in recent times.
It's been argued that Cena could've been the greatest heel in the company if the WWE had turned him at the height of the fans disapproval of him but why didn't they? The two arguments that have been used are that WWE didn't want to risk the merchandise sales by turning Cena heel and the other is that Triple H (as the number one heel at the time) was totally against the move and originally he blamed Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho for failing to get Cena over, something Triple H himself failed to do.
The WWE's commentary team didn't help matters by claiming the booing was because Cena was controversial. Why? What part of John Cena's character was ever controversial? He was never as aggressive as Austin or as in your face as the Rock. Nor did John Cena cheat to win matches or flip out with members of the crowd when things didn't go his own way. Using the controversial tag was just a cop out on the part of WWE.
John Cena must be respected though as against all the disapproval he never let it effect his professionalism and for that he deserves credit, Cena has always kept his persona intact no matter how loud the crowds objection to him.
In recent months it appeared fans where starting to warm to Cena but once put in the ring with an opponent that has any popularity Cena seems to come out the loser with the fans. The Great Khali was a good move by WWE as Cena was always going to prove more popular but now with a match in which two fan favorites in Lashley and Mick Foley are amongst his opponents the boo's and jeers are once again resounding towards Cena.
How much longer WWE persist with Cena is unknown but with no one standing out in the current roster John Cena will be a major player for a while to come, whether you like it or not.

Overview
People of all ages enjoy watching wrestling for all the excitement, the action and drama that it brings. Bodies flying across the ring, the dialogue, the moves all make up and add to the fun of watching wrestling on television. For those who are aspiring to have their own wrestling ring at home here are clear and concise steps on how to build a wrestling ring.
Step One: Pick a Good Location and Figure Out Measurements
The first thing to figure out when learning how to build a ring is to find a suitable spot where one can start construction. Ideally, the wrestling ring should be outdoors, placed on a spacious backyard unless there is sufficient room indoors where valuables aren't in the way. The location of the ring should be a flat surface with no sharp objects nearby to prevent someone from getting hurt. How big the ring will be will also depend on how much space one has in the desired location. It's a good idea at this point to get a measuring tape and measure the possible construction site of the wrestling ring.
Step Two: Go to the Hardware Store to Buy Goods
The two things one primarily needs when learning how to build a wrestling ring is 2 inch foam and plywood. These items serve as the base of the ring. Once at the hardware, it's also a good idea to grab poles, hooks and bungee ropes for the frame of the wrestling ring. The foam can be more than 2 inches thick, in fact, the thicker the better, but it cannot definitely be less than 2 inches otherwise one risks injury.
Step Three: Make the Center of the Ring
The third step in learning how to build a wrestling ring is to start with the center part, or where the action normally takes place. Cut the foam to fit the size of the area where the ring will be constructed and sew water proof material on it. A sewing machine is handy at this point although it can also be done by hand, albeit it would take much longer. Once the foam is ready, cut the plywood the same size as the covered foam and this will serve as the base of the cushion. To keep it stationary, one can either glue the foam to the board or use elastic bands to make sure it remains steady.
Step Four: Make the Frame
The last and final step in learning how to build a wrestling ring is to dig a hole for the corner posts, cover it in foam, attach hooks to it and make a frame for it using the bungee ropes.

Since it's inception in 1988 the Royal Rumble PPV has always been the second biggest event on the WWE's calendar and created tons of excitement among wrestling fans. The annual January event is built around a 30-man over the top rope battle royal that gives the winner a title match at WrestleMania. With this year's Royal Rumble right around the corner (Jan. 31, Georgia Dome), it's a great time to take a look at the Top Ten Royal Rumble moments from the Royal Rumble match itself...
10. Ric Flair wins the WWE Title; 1992
Remains the only Royal Rumble match in history where the title was up for grabs; Flair was the third entrant and outlasted Hulk Hogan, the Undertaker, Sid, Randy Savage and Rowdy Piper to win the match.
9. Mick Foley enters match THREE times; 1998
Foley had three gimmicks at the time - Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love - all three made appearances and eliminated at least one wrestler in the 1998 rumble match. The sheer goofiness of the concept had fans enjoying all three entrances by Foley's different personas.
8. Steve Austin sets record, eliminates 10 wrestlers; 1997
Austin broke Hulk Hogan's record by eliminating 10 competitors in the '97 match, which he also won by throwing Bret Hart over the top rope. Stone Cold eliminated the Undertaker, Vader, Jesse James, Savio Vega, Marc Mero, Owen Hart, Jake Roberts, Bart Gunn and Phineas Godwinn.
7. Vince McMahon and Steve Austin go all over the building; 1999
McMahon and Austin battled it out in the ring, in the crowd, in the arena's bathrooms, at the announcer's table and more during the '99 Rumble. It was unpredictable with Austin and McMahon making the match their own personal battleground.
6. Bret Hart and Lex Luger BOTH declared winners; 1994
Fans would see a similar finish over a decade later in 2005 with Batista and John Cena, but in that case officials restarted the match. This remains the only Royal Rumble with TWO winners, that BOTH received title shots. It was an exciting finish that held up to instant replay; Hart and Luger timed the end perfectly and hit the ground at the same time.
5. Cena surprise 30th entrant; 2008
A torn pectoral muscle put John Cena on the sideline and everybody thought he wouldn't be able to physically return to wrestling until much later in 2008, but the former World Champion shocked fans by coming out as the 30th entrant two years ago. He eventually won the match by eliminating Triple H and set a record for shortest time in the ring by a Royal Rumble winner.
4. Hulk Hogan eliminates tag team partner Randy Savage; 1989
They were the biggest tag team in the world, Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan - The Mega Powers, but the Royal Rumble in 1989 was a turning point for the duo. Hogan accidentally eliminated Savage in the match and that almost led to blows between the two because Savage was so angry. They held things together that night, but things would never be the same and the two would face off at WrestleMania two months later.
3. Austin wins for THIRD time; 2001
Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin each won two straight Royal Rumble matches in their wrestling careers, but only Austin was able to win a third time. He remains to this day the only wrestler in history to accomplish the feat. In 2001 he was able to win the match by eliminating Kane with the help of some vicious chair shots and a clothesline.
2. Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior face off; 1990
A very notable moment for a few reasons, both wrestlers were champions at the time (Hogan was the WWF Champion, Warrior was the Intercontinental Champion), it remains the only time a World Champion has competed in the Royal Rumble match, it was Warrior's first and only Royal Rumble match and it was the first major confrontation between the two major superstars. Warrior prevented Hogan from being eliminated by Rick Rude and Barbarian, Hogan returned the favor by eliminating Warrior. This would set up a major feud between the two and a match at WrestleMania that year.
1. Shawn Michaels escapes elimination and outlasts 29 competitors; 1995
One of the best Royal Rumble matches ever, Michaels and the British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith were the first and second entrants in the match respectively and survived the entire match to be the last two men standing as well. The end of the match saw Michaels thrown over the top rope and ALMOST eliminated by Smith, but he held on and only one of his feet touched the ground. As Smith celebrated Michaels get back in the ring and eliminated him. It was the first time ever a WWE wrestler won the Royal Rumble while being the first entrant.
